The Wilderness Years
David, whose name means “beloved,” provides a powerful example for us as we struggle to make sense of our lives. While he had an intimate relationship with God, he struggled with his own human nature—his emotions and desires—just like we do. Yet he never lost sight of God. And even after he struck out on his own, he always returned to God to renew and nurture that relationship that gave his life meaning and purpose.David was on the run from his father-in-law, King Saul. Saul was out to kill him, so David fled into the wilderness. Now in his wilderness years, he’s a fugitive, surrounded by his band of brothers, living off the land, trying to stay out of trouble, avoiding the Philistines but not feeling welcome in his own country.
